Day 1: Arrive Canberra

Transfer from Canberra Airport to the Hotel Kurrajong Canberra. Modern conveniences blend seamlessly with Art Deco glamour in this most historic of Canberra’s hotels. There will be a welcome dinner tonight at Sage.

Day 2: Canberra

For those interested, enjoy an early flight in a hot air balloon kicking off the Canberra Balloon festival. Marvel at views from above as the Canberra skyline turns into a sea of colour and movement as you float over the blend of historical and modern architecture and abundant greenery that give Australia’s capital city its charm.

Cruise across Lake Burley Griffin taking in stunning views of Canberra’s famous landmarks including Government House, the Governor General’s Residence. Visit the heritage-listed National Botanic Gardens which maintain a scientific collection of native plants from all parts of Australia. Next, explore the National Arboretum, a mosaic of living forests and gardens offering breathtaking views with over 44,000 rare and endangered trees.

Day 3: Canberra

Begin the day with a guided behind-the-scenes tour of Parliament House before enjoying a high tea luncheon. Experience a curator guided tour of the National Gallery of Australia including the Jeffrey Smart exhibition. One of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Smart sought inspiration from the world around him – looking to the environment of urban and industrial modernity transformed through his imaginative sense of theatre and intimate understanding of geometry and composition. On our walk to the National Portrait Gallery, we will view the Sculpture Garden on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin displaying the Gallery’s extensive collection of sculpture. This evening we have an after hours guided tour of the National Portrait Gallery focusing on the ‘Shakespeare to Winehouse – Icons from the National Portrait Gallery, London’ exhibition. A private dinner this evening at the National Portrait Gallery.

Day 4: Braidwood

Today we enjoy a historic tour of Braidwood, a National Trust-classified town known for its charming colonial buildings, rustic streetscape and rural beauty. This afternoon we visit Bungendore Woodworks gallery which itself was built from various Australian woods and which showcases Australian-made wood art, sculpture, craft and contemporary furniture of a very high standard from the country’s foremost wood designers. A relaxing afternoon of lunch and winetasting rounds out the day.

Day 5: Canberra

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of the National Museum of Australia’s ‘Ancient Greeks – Athletes, Warriors and Heroes’ exhibition. Explore the significance of ancient Greek competition through sport, politics, drama, music and warfare, illuminated by more than 170 objects from the British Museum.

We move on to a guided tour of another national treasure, The National Library of Australia, which holds the greatest collection in the  world of material relating to Australia and the Australian people. This afternoon we visit the Australian War Memorial, voted by travellers as Australia’s number one landmark. Tour the new Memorial Hall and hear stories of comradeship in wartime and tales of Australian innovation and resourcefulness in war. Enjoy a farewell dinner at the famous Boathouse Restaurant this evening.

Day 6: Depart Canberra

After a leisurely breakfast, transfer to Canberra Airport. Say farewell to new friends and take away memories of another delightful Bill Peach Journeys Sojourn.

Flights from your home port to Canberra are not included in the journey price. Should you require flights to and from Canberra, we can provide a competitive quote on airfares and pre and post tour accommodation in Canberra, at the commencement and conclusion of your journey.

Level of Fitness Required – Easy Going

These journeys are not physically demanding unless you want them to be. They include easy guided walks, which are mainly on flat ground. There will be times when you are required to board a launch for shore excursions. You must be able to walk up to 1 kilometre unaided and will not need any foreseen assistance throughout the journey. For all clients to fully enjoy this travel experience, excellent health and mobility is required by all.

This tour includes an optional hot air balloon flight on Day Two. The baskets have a gate that opens to step into the balloons, no climbing is required however, there may be a slight step.

We strongly urge you to consider the fitness rating before selecting your preferred journey, in respect for your fellow travellers. Bill Peach Journeys reserves the right to refuse travel to any client whose fitness level is below the recommended rating.
