After breakfast, we visit heritage listed Newstead House, Brisbane’s oldest home, established in 1846. This iconic Brisbane landmark has evolved from a simple Georgian cottage into a grand residence following significant renovations and extensions in 1867. The house occupies a commanding position within Newstead Park, offering sweeping views of the Hamilton and Bulimba reaches of the Brisbane River. Newstead House is an established museum, decorated and furnished to reflect the late Victorian period.

Next we experience Australia’s most beautiful river city from an iconic custom-made paddle wheeler. We will cruise past the beautiful Botanic Gardens, Kangaroo Point Cliffs, the Maritime Museum, Brisbane’s Southbank precinct including the Brisbane Wheel, the iconic Story Bridge, the city’s finest modern and heritage architecture, homes of the rich and famous and many more of Brisbane’s spectacular attractions. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

Day 3: Brisbane

After breakfast, we enjoy a backstage tour of the heritage listed Queensland Performing Arts Centre. This behind the scenes look allows us the opportunity to explore the theatres and discover the history and architecture of QPAC. Our guide will take us on a journey filled with stories and theatrical tales, giving an insider’s perspective into a busy performing arts centre.

After lunch, we enjoy the highlight of our journey, the inimitable Swan Lake performed by the world acclaimed Paris Opera Ballet. In Swan Lake, Pyotr Tchaikovsky used the timeless legend of deception and mis-matched lovers to create some of the most beautiful music ever written for ballet. The choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov left their distinguished mark on this story of an impossible love between an earthly prince and a bird princess, re-fashioning the myth of the swan dancer, the ultimate ballerina. This version, created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1984 by Rudolf Nureyev, adds a Freudian dimension to the story, illuminating Tchaikovsky’s poetic dream through a sense of profound hopelessness.
