Outback Cattle Station - NilpinnaFollowing breakfast, we visit Nilpinna Cattle Station which sits north of William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track. Currently running 4,500 head of cattle, this working station has a long and fascinating history dating back to 1875. Today we learn why the area around Parachilna is so remarkable and important to geological history. In 1946, geologist Reginald Sprigg discovered fossil imprints in rocks at the old Ediacara Mine. These fossils preserve an entire ecosystem and are unlike any creature alive today. This led to the naming of the first new geological era in 120 years, the Ediacaran which spans from 630 to 542 million years ago.

Overnight: Prairie Hotel or similar

Day 5: PARACHILNA - RAWNSLEY PARK

The journey continues by air from Leigh Creek to the majesty of the Flinders Ranges. The Flinders are an insight into the depth of Australia’s geological history, extending back more than a billion years, with long-disappeared mountain ranges, beaches, tidal flats, reefs and glacial moraines – the evidence remains in the rocks to this day.

A highlight of today is Wilpena Pound as we view it from above then up close while touring. The Pound rises as an immense, crater-like fusion of stark purple ridges and overhanging blues, strewn with tough and colourful vegetation, in jarring contrast to the flatness of the surrounding plains. Check in to Rawnsley Park, our accommodation nestled at the foot of Wilpena Pound. Rawnsley Park Station provides the perfect base for exploring South Australia’s spectacular Flinders Ranges.
