Your journey begins in Mumbai, the bustling capital of the sub-continent. On arrival, a private transfer awaits to whisk you from the airport to the Taj Mahal Palace.

Mumbai - Boarding

Explore Mumbai today, India’s largest city. Visit the Fort Heritage Area - the heart of the 18th century city - and the Prince of Wales Museum, or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. The excitement builds, as you transfer to board the luxurious Maharaja’s Express, your home for the next seven nights. On-board, you are transported back to a bygone era of elegant refinement. Ajanta Caves

Your journey through India takes you to the Ajanta Caves. Cut directly into the rock, and dating back to the 2nd century, there are over 300 caves containing Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculpted art. These masterpieces of Buddhist art contain figures of the Buddha and depictions of the Jataka tales.

Udaipur, Rajasthan

Admire the splendid landscape as you arrive this morning in the lake city, Udaipur. Renowned for its Rajput-era palaces, today explore the City Palace and Crystal Gallery. After a royal lunch in the Fateh Prakash Palace, explore the old bazaar, as well as the vintage car collection of the Royal Family.

Jodphur, Rajasthan

Explore Jodphur today - the famous “Blue City,” so named due to the brightly painted houses in the area. This city is also known as “Sun City” for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year round. Embark on an expedition of the Old Clock Tower Market, and continue to the majestic Mehrangarth Fort. Tonight, meet the Bishnoi tribe and explore the Rohet Garh village, as well as a sumptuous dinner.

Bikaner, Rajasthan

This morning, arrive at the desert kingdom of Bikaner, founded by Rao Bika in 1486. See the beautiful Lalgarh Palace Museum famous for its rose-pink sandstone, and adorned with sublimely carved filigree. Continue to the unassailable fortress of Junagarh, participate in a camel-cart procession, and view a performance by Kalbeliya and Langa artists.

Jaipur, Rajasthan

Enter the “Pink City”- Jaipur. Its distinctly coloured buildings were originally painted this colour to imitate the red sandstone architecture of Mughal cities. Here, watch a match of elephant polo, before continuing to the Amber Fort. Built in 1592, the Fort spectacularly blends Hindu and Rajput styles, and its size makes it more a town than a traditional fort. Your afternoon is at leisure, perhaps visiting the City Palace.

Ranthambore , Rajasthan

The journey continues to Ranthambore, for an exploration of the wilds of India, in the Ranthambore National Park. A jeep safari introduces you to the native flora and fauna of this protected area.

Re-boarding the train travel to Fatehpur Sikhi, a World Heritage Site, where you will visit Buland Darwaza and Panch Mahal.

Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Arrive this morning in the ‘City of Mughal Splendour’ – Agra. Famous for the Taj Mahal - a varying kaleidoscope of solitude, colour and mood. This tribute from a great emperor to the memory of his beloved wife was 22 years in the making and is an incredible experience that defies description.

Widely regarded as the earthly replica of paradise, the Taj is likened to “a vision, a dream, a poem and a wonder”. After your visit, enjoy a lavish champagne breakfast at the Taj Khema. Re-board the Maharajas Express for a final journey to Delhi. On arrival, transfer to the luxurious Imperial Hotel.

Delhi

This morning explore Old Delhi and Lutyens Delhi. This part of the city was named after leading British architect Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944), who was responsible for much of the architectural design and building when India was part of the British Empire in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
