This morning your private concierge will meet you in the foyer of the hotel to transfer you to the International Airport for a flight to Yangon (Rangoon) in Burma. The balance of the afternoon is at leisure for you to explore Yangon, surrounded on three sides by water. Suggested is a visit to the Bogyoke Market which has the largest selection of merchandise you’ll find under one roof. Along the maze-like aisles you will find a whole variety of everyday requisites and interesting Burmese souvenirs from lacquerware and Shan shoulder bags to t-shirts and cheroots. The Governor’s Residence Hotel in Yangon, is an imposing luxury teak mansion hotel dating from the 1920's within the elegant Embassy Quarter of Yangon and close to the spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda, built in 1920.

BAGAN
The ship arrives at Bagan, one of the most remarkable archaeological sights in Asia, if not the world. The magic of Bagan has inspired visitors to Myanmar for nearly 1000 years. Here over 2,000 temples and pagodas are scattered over an awe-inspiring plain beside the river. The ruins of Bagan cover an area of 25 square kilometres. The majority of its buildings were built in the 1000’s to 1200’s, during the time Bagan was the capital of the First Burmese Empire. A guided orientation tour introduces you to the most important temples. After lunch you may rejoin the guide to visit the inside of some of the more significant pagodas, alternatively you can hire a bicycle or horsedrawn cart and explore this fascinating area on your own. Late afternoon the guide takes you to watch the sun setting over a field of glowing pagodas by the river.

MOUNT POPA
Today enjoy a full day excursion to Mount Popa National Park. Mount Popa is a volcano 1518 metres above sea level, and located in central Burma about 50 km southeast of Bagan in the Pegu Range. It can be seen from the River Ayeyarwady as far away as 60 km in clear weather. Mount Popa is perhaps best known for the nearby stunningly picturesque Popa Taungkalat monastery atop an outcrop. The Popa Taungkalat Shrine is home to 37 Mahagiri Nats, or spirits. Statues depicting the Nats are at the base of the Shrine. People travel great distances to assure their good luck into the coming years to Mount Popa, host to an immense annual festival which actually takes place in the temple atop the mountain.

MAYMYO
Today we visit Maymyo or Pyin U Lwin as it is also known, a colonial hill station set high in the mountains. The town began as a military outpost established near a small Shan village with two dozen households situated on the Lashio-Mandalay trail between Nawnghkio and Mandalay. In 1896, a permanent military post was established in the town and later, because of its climate, it became a hill station and the summer capital of British Burma. Soak up the atmosphere with its cool climate, English style houses, colourful market and beautiful botanic gardens. A typical Shan lunch is taken at a restaurant in a colonial house. Return to ship for a final dinner on board.
