JOHANNESBURG - SOWETO - PRETORIA - ROVOS RAIL

This morning our local guide will take us through the infamous Soweto. The township is the largest black residential area in South Africa and is a fascinating contrast to Rosebank and Sandton in the north. This sprawling “city within a city” is home to approximately 2 million people, many of whom work in various parts of the greater metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand. Former home of Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu, this city has an extraordinary history. Transfer through to the country’s capital Pretoria to board the beautifully restored Rovos Rail. This 1600-kilometre journey is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. This beautifully restored train can be drawn by either steam, diesel or electric locomotives operating at various stages of the journey. The wagonlits or sleepers, as well as the observation and
dining cars have been splendidly refurbished in the style of the period but with an eye for modern comfort.

OKAVANGO DELTA

April is a perfect time to visit the Okavango Delta, the zebra and wildebeest migration has started and herds of these animals will be moving through the Savute area. In the Moremi area the Marula trees will be fruiting which attracts the bull elephants who wander from tree to tree shaking them hard to knock the fruits down to the ground in order to feast on them. The Delta will be lush and green and you will have a chance to see the last of the migratory birds before they head back to the northern hemisphere. During your stay you will experience open 4x4 vehicle game drives early morning and late afternoon (when conditions are ideal for viewing the wildlife), as well as guided walks by one of the experienced team of guides. Night game drives and star gazing presentations are also conducted after dinner. For those wishing to stay at the camp and relax, Khwai River Lodge is equipped with an elevated deck overlooking the Khwai floodplains, a swimming pool as well as a private health salon (for exclusive aromatherapy massages and treatments) and a small gymnasium. Widely acknowledged to be the predator capital of the world, this is the only place in Botswana where the Big Five can be seen. VICTORIA FALLS

After breakfast you will be met by a local guide for a leisurely walk to the Victoria Falls and national park area on the Zambia side. Columns of spray can be seen from far away as 546 million cubic metres of water per minute plummet over the edge with a width of nearly two kilometres into a deep gorge over 100 metres below. The wide basalt cliff, over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a wide placid river to a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges. Depending on the volume of water it is very possible to get wet from the waterfall spray as you cross the walk bridge. Your guide will provide an informative insight into the local customs and traditions of the area. From the national park you will then continue by coach to view the falls from the Zimbabwe side which provides the best distance views of the majestic Victoria Falls. The rest of the afternoon and dinner will be at leisure.
