Australian Expeditions Q&A
1. What is the main mode of travel used on an Australian Expedition? The Australian Expedition journeys are designed to cover in detail some of Australia's most extraordinary regions and hence the mode of transportation is selected to suit each regions terrain. On all journeys most of the travel is by comfortable four-wheel drive coach, however if there are long arduous uninteresting drives we will include travel by small aircraft. Throughout the journey where appropriate we will also incorporate cruises or rail travel pending on the region visited.
2. How fit do I need to be to undertake an Australian Expedition - choosing the right journey? At Bill Peach Journeys we are mmindful of the importance of selecting the right journey for you. We know you will enjoy your experience more if you're on the right journey, and we want to do everything we can to help you choose well. That is why we assign each trip an activity level, reflecting how active each journey is and how challenging the terrain. Please fell free to speak to a Journey planner for clarification based on your particular needs.
EASY GOING - These journeys are not physically demanding unless you want them to be. They include easy paced walks, which are mainly on flat ground. You must be able to walk up to 500 metres unaided and will not need any foreseen assistance throughout the journey.
ACTIVE - These journeys are designed for the more adventurous traveller. They require that you are able to walk up to 1km on uneven surfaces unaided, walk up steps, travel in four-wheel drive vehicles along ungraded roads and board boats from water tenders.
3. Will there be guide to explain each of the places visited? On each of the fully escorted programs there is a Journey Director who will look after all of the travel arrangements whilst on the journey. A knowledgeable driver/guide who is familiar with the local terrain will take you into spectacular little known destinations and local professional guides will join in certain places to share informative commentary on their specific area.
4. How many people travel on an Australian Expedition? Journey sizes range from 9 to 16 people pending on the region and vehicles able to access certain areas.
5. What is the standard of accommodation on an Australian Expedition? As with all Bill Peach Journeys the accommodation is the best available in each area visited, this can of course range from the five star luxury, for example, Peppers Hermitage in the Barossa Valley or the Sebel Reef House in Far North Queensland to the Karratha International or the Coen Guesthouse. Due to the remote regions of some of the places visited accommodation can vary greatly however we have chosen to include these destinations because of their location to the extraordinary highlights in the area.
6. What should I pack? Althought the accommodation is the very best available, formal attire is not necessary. There are laundry facilities throughout the journey. Smart casual attire is appropriate. We recommend you include the following when packing:
- Easy care lightweight and comfortable clothes such as shorts, light slacks, skirts, cotton shorts / blouses and T-shirts
- Comfortable closed in walking shoes (essential!)
- Pants / trousers
- Sun hat
- Sweater / Jumper / Spray Jacket / Parka
- Swimwear
- For the Captains Dinner - Smart Casual (Dinner jackets are not required)
Please note that temperatures can vary dramatically. It is advisable to bring items of clothing that you can layer if required.
Don't forget:
- Sun lotion
- Personal insect repellent
- A camera / video and plenty of film!
